An anode active material for a lithium secondary battery comprises: a metal matrix; and an intermetallic compound between an Si active metal and an additional metal, dispersed in the metal matrix, wherein the intermetallic compound does not form a compound with the metal matrix. The intermetallic compound and the metal matrix are present in the form of an alloy. The intermetallic compound is present in a nanocrystallite state or in an amorphous state. The intermetallic compound has an average size of 100 nm or less.
