PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nonionic surfactant that is dissolved in an aqueous alkaline solution of a high concentration and exhibits a high defoaming effect. SOLUTION: A defoaming agent for an alkali cleaner comprises a compound (A) represented by formula (1) and a compound (B) represented by formula: Z-[(CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>O)<SB>n</SB>-H]<SB>p</SB>(wherein Z is a residue of an amine having p active hydrogen or hydrogens exclusive of active hydrogen or hydrogens; n is 0.5-1.5; and p is 1-5) wherein a weight ratio (B/A) of the compound (B) to the compound (A) is 0.5-4.0. [With the provision that in formula (1), R is an 8-20C alkyl or alkenyl group; each of l and m, which independently denotes an average addition mole number of an oxyethylene group, is 0.5-1.5 and l+m=1 to 3].
