PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely detect a paper abnormality (paper conveyance abnormality) such as paper jamming or paper skewing by a simple constitution. SOLUTION: In the recorder which drives in a main scan direction a recording head and a carriage that carries an optical paper width detection sensor to detect a scan width in the main scan direction of the recording head, the carriage is scanned, and one end position of a recording paper in the main scan direction is detected by the optical paper width detection sensor. A distance between the end position and a paper reference position preliminarily set outside a conveyance region of the recording paper is calculated. When a differenceΔP between distances PREFand PEDGat two scan positions among a plurality of the number of times of scan of the carriage performed on the same paper becomes not smaller than a predetermined reference difference, it is judged as the paper abnormality.
