<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light source device effectively using light, and allowing the whole device to be downsized; and a projector using it. <P>SOLUTION: The whole of light having entered in a reflector 2 from a light emitting point O is returned to the light emitting point O by compensating influence of a lens effect by a tube bulb part 11 of an arc tube 1. Thereby, electrodes 15, 16 and the like of the arc tube 1 are prevented from becoming a shade body, and the light can be emitted by precisely adjusting the optical path of the generated light, whereby the light can be effectively used. The arc tube 1 is arranged to set the arrangement direction of the pair of electrodes 15 and 16 vertical to a rotational symmetry axis being the optical axis of the reflector 2.
