PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize an image reading apparatus having a still original reading function and an automatic document feeding original reading function while preventing a dark shadow from being photographed on a read image during an operation of the still original reading function. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus detects the external edge position of an original (S120), and deals image data positioned inside the detected edge position as image data read by the still original reading function, and thus, a dark shadow can be prevented from being photographed on a portion corresponding to a through aperture 106 in executing original reading by the still original reading function. Accordingly, a reading window on which an original is placed in reading the original by the still original reading function is integrated (used doubly) with a reading window used to read the original by the automatic document feeding original reading function, and as a result, a dark shadow can be prevented from being photographed on the portion corresponding to the through aperture 106 while miniaturizing the image reading apparatus.
