PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of controlling the surface potential of an image carrier speedily and accurately by a low-cost simple configuration without being adversely affected by a temperature change, and so on. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 includes a charger 50 having a shield case 51, a charge wire 52, and a grid wire 53 and used for charging the surface of a photoreceptor drum 31. Further, the apparatus 1 includes a current feedback control means 80 for adjusting a grid voltage so that the value of a current flowing into the photoreceptor drum 31 is set to a target value, thereby controlling the surface potential of the photoreceptor drum 31. This current feedback control means 80 serially updates the target value of the current flowing into the photoreceptor drum 31. This makes it possible to control the surface potential based on the value of the current flowing into the drum 31, without being adversely affected by unfavorable conditions such as a change in the surface temperature T of the photoreceptor drum 31 and a high resistance of the grid wire 53.
