PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rail height detecting method and rail height detecting mechanism for measuring the rail height from an electromagnetic detector by processing referring to a characteristic graph utilizing the electromagnetic detector using a differential coil. SOLUTION: In this rail height detecting method, respective detection signals of first and second air-core coils are obtained from an electromagnetic sensor that has first and second air-core coils arranged adjacently and wound in the opposite direction and is disposed in a track recording coach correspondingly to the upper part of the top of the rail. Displacement of the electromagnetic sensor in the orthogonal direction to the travel direction with respect to the rail is obtained based on the ratio between the sum signal and difference signal of the first and second air-core coils. Referring to the characteristic graph showing the relation between the sum signal of the detection signals of the first and second air-core coils and the height of the electromagnetic sensor with respect to the rail, the height of the electromagnetic sensor with respect to the rail is obtained based on the characteristic graph corresponding to the displacement.
