A composition comprising an extract of Laminaria japonica is provided to show excellent antibacterial activity on Gardnerella vaginalis, main causing bacteria of vaginitis, thereby being effective for preventing and treating the vaginitis. An antibacterial composition of Gardnerella vaginalis comprises an extract of Laminaria japonica as an effective ingredient, wherein the extract is a crude extract using at least one extraction solvent selected from the group consisting of water, C1-4 alcohol, ethyl acetate, hexane, dichloromethane and a mixture solvent thereof. A composition for preventing or treating vaginitis or cleansing the vagina comprises the antibacterial composition as an effective ingredient.
