PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform more proper monochromatic reading while radiating light from light sources of red light, green light and blue light. SOLUTION: A white reference plate 16 is irradiated with S pieces of red pulsed light, green pulse light and blue pulsed light (S is the sum of positive integers K, L, M among which at least one is different from the others), thereby setting each pulse time width such that the quantity of light in each color detected by a CIS 36 can be settled within a predetermined proper range, respectively. Furthermore, at intervals of shift signals, a read document is irradiated with K, L and M pieces of pulsed light in the respective colors for the pulse time width set for the light in each color. Thus, since the quantity of light is controlled in accordance with the number of pulses, a more accurate light quantity ratio can be provided while being hardly affected by delay or the like of a light quantity change at pulse rising and falling.
