Provided are a power steering device for generating steering assistance force by actuation of a hydraulic mechanism having a hydraulic pump, and a method of driving the power steering device. The power steering device (2) has high response achieved without increasing the size of a magnetic motor. The power steering device is adapted to generate steering assistance force by a hydraulic mechanism (21) having a hydraulic pump (23). The power steering device has a magnetic motor (3) having a permanent magnet and driving the hydraulic pump (23), and also has a motor drive device (4) for setting, depending on the speed electromotive voltage of the magnetic motor (3), an advance phase of a motor current relative to a speed electromotive voltage that is generated by the flux of the permanent magnet and driving the magnetic motor (3) based on the advance phase.
