A signal processing apparatus and a method of controlling the signal processing apparatus are provided to control power supplied to a transmitter according to a distance between the transmitter and an external device so as to reduce power consumption when a signal is transmitted to the external device. A signal processing apparatus(100) includes a signal processing unit(110) for processing a signal, a transmitter(120) for transmitting the signal processed by the signal processing unit to an external device(200), a power supply(130) for supplying power for transmitting the signal to the transmitter, and a controller(140) for controlling the power supply to supply power with a level corresponding to a distance between the transmitter and the external device to the transmitter.
