PURPOSE:To obtain a picture transmitter not deteriorating the quality of picture by informing the information of width of recording paper from the reception side to the operator at the transmission. CONSTITUTION:A network controller 1, a line 2, a MODEM 3, a converter 4 converting a serial data into a parallel data, a MODEM controller 5, a bus line 6, a CPU 7, a memory 8 and a display section 9 are provided. The CPU 7 has a function information the recording paper width at the reception side to the operator at the sending side via a display section 9. After the sending side receives a signal from the reception side, for example, the bit pattern of the signal is stored once in the memory 8. Then the width of an original in the bit pattern is detected. Whether or not the width of original is A4 size or below is discriminated and when the width is the size A4 or below, the sending mode is set.
