PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide fixed image display and variable image display in combination with good visibility on the entire display panel without forming unevenness on a substrate surface of the display panel. SOLUTION: In the panel substrate 11a on a viewing side of the display panel 1, a fixed pattern portion 13 corresponding to a fixed pattern is formed, by laser processing, matching the position where the fixed pattern desires to be displayed. In the display panel 1 in a region other than a variable image display region for variable image display under applied voltage control, i.e. a region (fixed image display region 12-2) as a background of the fixed pattern, an electrode 14-2 for background is formed. With such a configuration, optical characteristics of the optical display device are characterized in that display is transparent (white or light-transmissive) when no voltage is applied to the electrode 14-2 for background, and black (or non-transmissive) when a voltage is applied.
