PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-performance compact projection optical system capable of zooming or focusing peculiar to a non-axial optical system, where the characteristic of the non-axial optical system is utilized, without causing image skip in oblique projection by the non-axial optical system, and a projection type image display device. SOLUTION: The projection optical system PO enlarging and projecting an image on a display element surface SG onto a screen surface SL has rotationally asymmetric first and second curved surface mirrors M1 and M2 eccentrically arranged in such a manner that an angle formed by the screen surface SL and an axial principal ray incident on the screen surface SL is not perpendicular. The projection optical system PO changes the focal length of the entire system by parallel displacement and rotational displacement of at least one optical element group including the first and the second curved surface mirrors M1 and M2 for the purpose of zooming or focusing.
