PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that achieves small-footprint and reduction of cost by changing the disposing position of the component of an optical system and the attaching position of the hinge part of an original cover member. SOLUTION: In the image reader 10, the original cover member is supported to be openable/closable on a reader body through a pair of hinge parts 28a and 28b. Reflected light L by a light source 12 from an original is received by a light receiving element 22 through a first reflection mirror 14, a second reflection mirror 16, a third reflection mirror 18 and a lens 20 in this order, so as to read images of the original. The pair of hinge parts 28a and 28b is arranged at both ends on the inner side of the reader body part respectively, and provided predetermined dimension inside from both ends of a carriage 24 so that the first reflection mirror 14 and the second reflection mirror 16 may not interfere with the hinge parts 28a and 28b when the carriage 24 moves back and forth.
