PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane monitoring method and membrane monitoring system capable of detecting the minute defect of the membrane such as a pin hole by chemically discriminating the existence of defect. SOLUTION: A part of filtered liquid filtered by the membrane 2 for filtering the liquid to be processed is extracted, dissolved component is separated from the extracted filtered liquid by making vaporize the dissolved components, and the volatile compound concentration in the separated dissolved components is detected by the detector 10 for gas detection, thereby the existence of the defect of the membrane 2 is determined by discriminating whether the concentration of the volatile compound exceeded the concentration specified by the performance of the membrane 2 or not.
