The method involves determining a geographical position of a vehicle. A display device (1) displays a geographical map depending on the determined position, where elements e.g. points of interest are represented on a map. The display device automatically displays additional information at the elements in a partial area of a display (2). The information is displayed only for a defined time interval, if there is no input from a user. The information is displayed by the display device, if the distance of the geographical position of the vehicle to the elements falls below a limit value. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling a display of a display device in a vehicle.
