摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the exhaust emission control performance by collecting particulate matter contained in the exhaust gas and suppress the lowering of the output due to the rise of the back pressure in the exhaust gas passage in an internal combustion engine. <P>SOLUTION: This internal combustion engine comprises cylinder groups in which a plurality of cylinders are selectively arranged on the left and right first and second banks 12, 13, respectively. First and second exhaust pipes 57, 58 are connected to the cylinder groups of the banks 12, 13, respectively. First and second preceding-stage three-way catalytic converters 59, 60 and first and second control valves 65, 66 are installed in the exhaust pipes 57, 58, respectively. A particulate filter 61 is installed in the second exhaust pipe 58. The upstream sides of the preceding-stage three-way catalytic converters 59, 60, the particulate filter 61, and the control valves 65, 66 in the exhaust pipes 57, 58 are made to communicate with each other through a communication pipe 64.
