PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for decomposing cellulose contained in a cellulose raw material. SOLUTION: This method for decomposing the cellulose includes sealing crushed cellulosic biomass in a pressure-resistant closed container, adding 5g of nickel oxyhydroxide solid-containing one or more of zinc, aluminum, magnesium, calcium, manganese, cobalt, copper, and tin to an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution having a concentration of 5%, pure water and nickel to prepare a catalyst reaction solution, stirring the catalyst reaction solution for decomposing the cellulose, in the presence of the nickel oxyhydroxide as the catalyst with stirring blades, and simultaneously heating the solution at a temperature-rising rate of 5°C/min to decompose the cellulose. The reaction is performed at a spontaneous pressure (saturated steam pressure of water) in a reactor. After the temperature of the catalyst reaction solution reaches a prescribed temperature, the catalyst reaction solution is heated for one hour, and then cooled to room temperature at a rate of about 3°C/min.
