PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically control depth of field to meet a photographer's intention. SOLUTION: The depth of field is automatically controlled by detecting a face from a photographed image and controlling the open degree of a diaphragm according to the position, size or the direction of the detected face. For example, when the position of the face is near the center, when the size of the face is large, or the direction of the face is in front, it is assumed that the noticing degree of a photographer to the face is high and the depth of field is made shallow so as to focus the face to blur a background. On the other hand, when the position of the face is near the end, when the size of the face is small, or the direction of the face is sideways, it is assumed that the photographer not only notices the face but notices the background and the depth of field is made deep so as to focus both of the face and the background.
