PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a terminal deformation detecting method and a terminal deformation detecting device capable of surely and efficiently detecting deformation failures of an insulation displacement terminal connected to a wire with a terminal. SOLUTION: After retaining a wire with a terminal AB with a wire retention device 2, a position compensation device 3, and a terminal retention device, a deformation detecting unit 5 is raised and stopped at a height position where an insulation barrel Ab or a wire barrel Ac deformed in a state opened toward a lower part of a barrel part Aa of the insulation displacement terminal A is inserted between a projecting part 8a and a light-receiving part 8b of a deformation detecting sensor 8, and is horizontally moved along a bottom face of the insulation displacement terminal A. When either the insulation barrel Ab or the wire barrel Ac of the insulation displacement terminal A is deformed into an opened state, a space between the projecting part 8a and the light-receiving part 8b of the deformation detecting sensor 8 is shielded from light, and light-receiving signals outputted from the deformation detecting sensor 8 to a deformation judgment device 12 is temporarily interrupted, so that it can be judged that a proper insulation displacement state is not carried out.
