The method involves providing with measuring phases (MesPh), during which the particle contained in an exhaust gas flow (ms-Abg) is absorbed at a measuring section. Protection phases (ProtPh) are provided, during which a measure for reduction of the absorption of particles on the measuring section is captured. A protection phase operating voltage (Ub-Sen-ProtPh) is predetermined to the measuring section as operating voltage (Ub-Sen) during the protection phase. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for operating a collecting particle sensors (2) a controller program for executing a method (3) a controller program product.
