APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR USING PUSH MAIL SERVICE IN PORTABLE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

An apparatus and a method for implementing a push mail service in a portable terminal are provided to omit a periodic polling process executed to confirm the arrival of a message by using a mail agent which transmits a message arrival indication message to a portable terminal in case a new message is received. A mobile communication system, which supports a push mail service, comprises a mail agent(100) and a mail client(110). The mail agent confirms whether a new message for the mail client exists in a mail server(120). If a new message exists, the mail agent downloads the new message from the mail server and transmits a message to inform the mail client that the new message has received. Receiving the message indicating that the new message exists, the mail client makes a request for the new message. Based on the mail client's request, the mail agent delivers the new message to the mail client.
