PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve operability and reliability by avoiding slipping-out of a position by sudden braking and a miss shift, while securing an excellent shift feeling, in a range shifting device for establishing a target shift stage in response to operation of a shift lever in an automatic transmission for a vehicle. SOLUTION: This range shifting device has a detent lever 31 changing a state of a manual valve 8 being one component of a gear shifting hydraulic control device 6 provided in the automatic transmission 1 in response to tilting in the proper direction in response to the operation of the shift lever 21. A resistance applying means 50 is arranged for applying resistance corresponding to angular velocity acting on the detent lever 31 to the detent lever 31, when tilting this detent lever 31.
