<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus and an image forming method which correct a synchronous shift in a scanning direction. <P>SOLUTION: This image forming apparatus 100 includes a light source 206, an optical unit 102, a sub-scanning shift detecting unit 212, and a controlling unit 202. In this case, the light source 206 is driven by corresponding to image data. The optical unit 102 includes a deflecting means 102c which deflects a light beam being output from the light source 206 in the main scanning direction, and an optical element 102e which makes the light beam reflected on a photo-sensitive drum. The sub-scanning shift detecting unit 212 is arranged on the outside of the optical unit 102, and detects the shift of the light beam L in the sub-scanning direction which is defined in a direction being orthogonal to the main scanning direction.
