PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that the boundary of a bundle of paper money is undetectable due to sticking of dusts, and to provide a counting device for surely detecting a bundle of paper money without being affected by the print color or positional deviation of the band of the bundle of paper money. SOLUTION: This counting device is provided with: a sampling part 31 in which an ultrasonic sensor 19 is arranged so as to be movable facing the bundle of paper money as the object of counting accumulated like a row and which repeatedly calculates a time between the output wave of the ultrasonic sensor 19 and the reflected wave from the bundle of paper money of the output wave; a difference calculation part 32 which calculates a difference in the time calculated by the sampling part 31; and a comparison decision part 34 which compares and decides whether or not the difference calculated by the difference calculating part 32 is larger than a predetermined value. When it is decided that the difference is larger than the predetermined value by the comparison decision part 34, it is decided it is a clearance between the bundle of paper money and the bundle of paper money, and counted as one bundle of paper money by a counting part 35.
