PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a display device and a brightness adjustment method, capable of reducing power consumption without using special components while promoting the rise of brightness and enlargement of a screen. SOLUTION: A data detection part 15 which operates the number of data pieces of lighting data and a brightness control part 142 which has a function of adjusting brightness on the basis of the number of data pieces of lighting data are provided between a lighting control part 14 and a display part 10. The data detection part 15 takes in a signal converted to lighting data by the lighting control part 14, from display data and compares the signal with a prescribed value. When a lighting data calculation value exceeds the prescribed value, in terms of comparison between the lighting data calculation value and the prescribed value, a lighting brightness signal for reducing brightness of the display part 10 is inputted to the brightness control part 142 to control a driving circuit 13. Thus a driving signal supplied to the display part 10 has a duty ratio of lighting brightness reduced, that is, a turning-on period is shortened, whereby brightness of the display part 10 is reduced to reduce the power consumption.
