<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of easily performing color shift correction by eliminating operation for changing an image forming condition, and to provide a method for performing color shift correction and a program. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is equipped with a sensor 15 for reading a shift detecting pattern formed on an image carrier in order to detect the shift amount of a write-in position and a density detecting pattern formed on the image carrier in order to detect the density of the shift detecting pattern. The sensor 15 includes a light emitting element for radiating light toward the shift detecting pattern and the density detecting pattern, and a light receiving element for receiving reflected light from the shift detecting pattern and the density detecting pattern.
