PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a formulation for protein stabilization that is obtained by stabilizing lyophilized bone morphogenetic protein (BMP), keeps at least 60% biological activity in rehydration of BMP and produces a rehydrated liquid product to be readily treated by a surgeon. SOLUTION: The Lyophilized formulations and compositions containing bone morphogenetic protein which has been stabilized by lyophilization contain primarily trehalose as an excipient for lyophilized compositions and for their subsequent storage and reconstitution and can also optionally include other excipients, including buffers and surfactants.
