PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an information retrieval apparatus, which effectively prevents an unnecessary retrieval index from existing indefinitely while a means for reducing a processing cost is prepared for if the same content is again inputted after the content has not been detected. SOLUTION: The information retrieval apparatus that connects to a plurality of devices via a network and retrieves the contents held by each device, comprises: a means for storing retrieval information to retrieve contents; a means for detecting the existence of contents on the network; a means for storing a status in order to store status information for the information retrieval by reflecting a detected result; and a means for determining a decision based on the content within the status information, wherein the information retrieval apparatus deletes corresponding retrieval information from the means for storing the retrieval information if it is decided that a first time period has been passed.
