The method involves calibrating and adjusting a temperature sensor integrated in an automatic transmission e.g. stepless transmission, in such a manner that a characteristic is determined during or immediately after starting a motor vehicle, based on a motor vehicle-sided reference temperature sensor. Information based on time elapsed between starting and previous stopping of the motor vehicle is provided. The temperature sensor is calibrated and adjusted based on the characteristic and a temperature measured value of the reference sensor, when the time is larger than a threshold value.
