A method and an apparatus for encoding and decoding an image by using motion compensation filtering are provided to filter motion-compensated prediction data to reduce a difference between the prediction data and original image data, thereby reducing the size of residual data and improving the efficiency of image compression. A method for encoding an image comprises the following steps of: creating a motion vector for a current block(810); creating a prediction block of the current block through motion compensation(820); determining weight values within a mask of a predetermined size by using correlation between the adjacent pixels of the current block and the adjacent pixels of a block corresponding to a reference frame(830); applying the mask having the created weight values to the prediction block of the current block to create a filtered prediction block(840); and performing the conversion, quantization, and entropy encoding for a residual between the filtered prediction block and an original pixel block to create a bit stream(850). |
