An electric discharge lamp operating device includes: a DC power supply c ircuit (1) which outputs DC power, an inverter circuit (2) which converts th e DC power outputted by the DC power supply circuit (1) to AC power and supp lies it to an electric discharge lamp DL, a control circuit (3) which contro ls the frequency (operation frequency) of output from the inverter circuit ( 2), and a start detection circuit (4) which detects starting (start) of elec tric discharge by the electric discharge lamp DL. The control circuit (3) op erates in a start improvement mode for lowering the operation frequency than that in an operating mode for a predetermined time after detection of the s tart of the electric discharge lamp DL by the start detection circuit (4) in a no-load mode, and thereafter shifts to the operating mode for keeping ope ration of the electric discharge lamp DL. This enables smooth shift of the e lectric discharge lamp DL to stable operation.
