PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multistep forging apparatus suitable for suppressing the generation of forged articles with defects in the dimensional accuracy, and a multistep forging method. SOLUTION: The multistep forging apparatus includes an automatic transportation device disposed with a plurality of forging dies 6A-6E opening or closing the dies in synchronization with a press machine 2 in the order of steps, and sequentially transporting a workpiece W to the forging dies 6A-6E in the subsequent steps. The apparatus sets the upper and lower limit values of a press load necessary for forging a part W to be produced, detects the press load for each press cycle by the press machine 2, determines whether the press load presents within an allowance range set by the upper and lower values of the set press load or not, allows the subsequent press cycle when the press load presents within the allowance value, and stops and/or alarms the press cycle when the press load beyond the allowance range is detected.
