PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an efficient backwash method backwashing multiple membrane modules without complicating a control system or a piping system, while shortening the time required for pressurizing backwash water. SOLUTION: The backwash method backwashes the membrane separation unit provided with multiple membrane modules 1 by each module unit. Each membrane module 1 is connected to a common backwash water tank 3 via a common water pipe 2, and to a common compressed air tank 5 via a common air pipe 4. The backwash water of an amount for backwashing multiple membrane modules contained in the common backwash water tank 3 is pressurized, and a backwashing process comprising water backwash with the pressurized backwash water and air blow by compressed air is repeated for every membrane module 1.
