PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a reducing gas without accompanying complicated computation. SOLUTION: This gas detector/detecting method acquires an output signal Vs from a sensor element 10 at the time when a voltage impression to a heater coil 12 is changed by one cycle according to a voltage impression cycle. The gas detector/detecting method acquires an extremal value appearing time from the acquired output signal Vs from the sensor element 10, by an extremal value appearing time detecting part 24. The gas detector/detecting method compares a value corresponding to the extremal value appearing time in every gas kind of the reducing gas stored in an extremal value appearing time storage part 23, with a value corresponding to the extremal value appearing time at the first time detected by the extremal value appearing time detecting part 24, and specifies the kind of the reducing gas.
