A method for operating a washing machine is provided to sanitize laundry and improve washing effect by supplying steam and irradiating ultraviolet to laundry after finishing a final dehydration cycle. A method for operating a washing machine comprises the steps of supplying steam into a drum before supplying water(S120), irradiating ultraviolet to the laundry while supplying steam into the drum to sterilize the laundry by operating an ultraviolet generating unit(S130), and stopping the steam supply when the internal temperature of the drum reaches a set temperature(S150). |
