PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel organic EL element material exhibiting high fluorescent light emission characteristic in the solid state and excellent in heat- and light-stability, and to provide an organic EL element with long life capable of obtaining high color purity and brightness at a low drive voltage using it. SOLUTION: The organic EL element makes benzo[ghi]perylene and its derivative as a light emission material. The perylene compound may have, as a substituent, a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a hydroxyl group, an amino group, a cyano group, an alkyl group, an alkenyl group, an alkoxy group, an aryloxy group, an aryl group, an aromatic heterocyclic group, an aralkyl group, an arylthio group, an alkylthio group, an acyl group, an alkoxycarbonyl group, an aryloxycarbonyl group, an N-alkylcarbamoyl group, an N-arylcarbamoyl group, an acylamino group or a carboxyl group.
