PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wave monitor for a ship capable of reducing a burden of a ship operator and capable of enhancing safety of the ship, by observing properly a wave breaking portion of a wave front part by an image display, as to an image of a wave on a sea face photographed by a CCD camera mounted on the ship. SOLUTION: This wave monitor is provided with a binary image memory 3a for binarizing and storing the image of the wave on the sea face in a bow front side photographed by the CCD camera in a bridge chamber, and a variable-density image memory 3b thereabout, an image processor 4 is provided to detect a characteristic of the wave, based on image information from the memories 3a, 3b, and a moving direction of the wave with respect to a hull is detected by displaying an image of the wave breaking portion of the wave front part at a current time point, and an image indicating only an outline of the wave breaking portion before a prescribed time, on a display 7, based on information from the image memories 3a, 3b and the image processor 4.
