PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an impact absorbing type steering column device capable of reducing the damage to a driver of a vehicle even if an impact load is applied to the driver in the event of a secondary collision. SOLUTION: The impact absorbing type steering column device is equipped with an inner column 20, a supporting bracket 30 fixed to a body side member, a movable bracket 32 movable in the direction fore and aft of the vehicle while being supported by the supporting bracket, and an energy absorbing member 48 installed between the supporting bracket and the movable bracket. The energy absorbing member is structured so that the deformation resistance of its stroke latter half plasticity region 48c which assumes a plastic deformation in the stroke latter half of the inner column, is larger than the deformation resistance of the stroke first half plasticity regions 48a, 48b, 48b1 which exhibit plastic deformations from the initial period of each stroke of the inner column to the latter half of the stroke.
