PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine the rotation amount of a rotary switch by preventing a processing burden at an arithmetic processing section from being increased and further by preventing an operator from feeling a sense of incompatibility, even when the operator rotates the rotary switch at high speed. SOLUTION: A rotation amount determining apparatus includes: an error judging means 8 for determining a pulse signal detection error by comparing a pulse signal detected by a rotary encoder with a pulse signal detected a prescribed time (t) before; an error monitoring time measuring means 8 for measuring the lapse of an error monitoring time, when the detection error is judged, with the relevant determination as a reference; a change count means 8 for counting the number of changes in the pulse signal detected while the error monitoring time is measured; and a rotation amount determining means 8 for determining the completion of lapse of the error monitoring time and determining the rotation amount of a rotary switch 7d during the error monitoring time from the counted number of changes in pulse information.
