PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an optical element, by which the occurrence of an air pool can be prevented even in the case of manufacturing an optical element in which the optical surface formed by the transfer of the forming surface of an upper mold is a convex surface, and the optical element having a high precision optical surface can be efficiently manufactured, and to provide a forming mold used in the method. SOLUTION: The forming mold used in the method is equipped with: a lower mold having a receiving surface receiving molten glass; an upper mold having a concave forming surface for press forming the molten glass in cooperation with the lower mold; and a side wall for restricting the molten glass so that the curvature radius of the central part of the upper surface of molten glass on the lower mold becomes smaller than that of the central part of the forming surface. The molten glass is supplied on the lower mold, and after a predetermined time, the side wall is retracted to a position not coming in contact with the molten glass, and a first optical surface being a transfer surface of the forming surface of the upper mold is formed by press forming the molten glass.
