PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cleaning method of a separation membrane module for raw water filtration for water purification, in particular, a backwashing cleaning method. SOLUTION: The cleaning method of the separation membrane module comprises processes of: (A) supplying cleaning water to the raw water side from a permeating side of the separation membrane module having an inlet/outlet port in the raw water side and discharging from the inlet/outlet port; and (c) supplying raw water to the raw water side and discharging part of the raw water to the outside of the system without permeating to the permeating side.
