An image pickup apparatus and an image pickup method are provided to display a position where dust adheres to the image pickup apparatus, thereby conveniently removing the dust. A lens unit(102) includes an iris mechanism part for adjusting the light amount of incident light from a subject. An image pickup unit sequentially outputs images of the subject, which are focused on a focusing face, as image data, wherein the lens unit is disposed between the image pickup unit and the focusing face. An iris controller adjusts the light amount of the incident light from the subject by changing an iris value of the iris mechanism part when the image pickup unit continuously picks up images of the subject. A predicting unit predicts whether external particles adhere onto the focusing surface based on data of at least two images of different iris values among the image data sequentially outputted from the image pickup unit. The lens unit, the image pickup unit, the iris controller, and a predicting unit constitute an image pickup apparatus(100). |
