<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization dispersion compensator which has improved control accuracy even under the condition that higher-order polarization dispersion cannot be ignored, when compensating polarization mode dispersion by using the degree of polarization as a monitor signal. <P>SOLUTION: An optical signal input from an optical input terminal 1 is subjected to adjustment of the plane of polarization by a polarization adjustment part 2 and then is separated into two orthogonal polarization components by a polarization separation part 4a. One polarization component is inputted to a polarization synthesizing part 4b through an optical transmission line 31, and the other is subjected to the group delay time adjustment through an optical transmission line 32 and a delay time adjustment part 5 and then is input to the polarization synthesizing part 4b. These polarization components are synthesized by the polarization synthesizing part 4b, and a part of the synthesis result is branched by an optical coupler 9 and is transmitted through a narrow-band optical bandpass filter 10, and the degree of polarization is measured by a DOP monitor 11 with respect to this transmitted light. A control circuit 20 controls the polarization adjustment part 2 and an input polarization monitor part 7 on the basis of the monitored degree of polarization. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
