PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevating/lowering type article conveying device capable of adequately transferring articles while maintaining the conveying efficiency at a high level. SOLUTION: In the elevating/lowering type article conveying device, a control means (H) is constituted to store information on the target elevating/lowering position of a transfer device corresponding to the adequate transfer height for article transfer, and executes the elevating/lowering control processing of controlling the operation of an elevating/lowering driving means (13) so as to elevate/lower the transfer device to the adequate transfer height based on detection condition and stored information on the target elevating/lowering position of an elevating/lowering position detection means (17), and the step position checking processing for discriminate whether or not the transfer device is located in a permissible elevating/lowering range determined corresponding to the adequate transfer height based on detection information of a beam detection means (BS) after the transfer device is elevated/lowered to the adequate transfer height.
