<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel cell system of a simple structure capable of reducing the density of hydrogen in the exhaust gas below a reference value without increasing the occupying space of the fuel cell system. <P>SOLUTION: An expansion chamber former 17 is provided in the way of the piping 25 for purging gas and a purging open/close valve 26 is provided in the piping 25A for purging gas in the upstream side of the expansion chamber former 17. The expansion chamber 30 in the expansion chamber former 17 is equipped with a reed valve 31 and a shim 33. The reed valve 31 and the shim 33 are tightened together to the end wall 29 by a bolt 32.
