PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal ring holding apparatus capable of reliably holding a metal ring when a thin-plate endless metal ring is deformed from a circular shape to an oblong shape in plan view, or when the ring is restored from an oblong shape to a circular shape in plan view. SOLUTION: The metal ring holding apparatus 3, 5 is equipped with: a pair of holding plates 34, 54 in an advanceable/retractable manner to/from each other with parallel surfaces 34a, 54a being directed to the positions opposite to each other on the outer circumferential sides of metal rings W placed on ring loading parts 33, 53; and ring pressing means 35, 55 for moving the holding plates 34, 54 between a position Q at which the metal ring W of the circular shape in plan view is pressed by the holding plates 34, 54 from both sides and deformed into the oblong shape in plan view consisting of a pair of chord parts Wa opposite and parallel to each other and a pair of arc-shaped parts Wb opposite to each other via the chord parts Wa and held, and a position P at which the pressure is released to restore the metal ring W of the oblong shape in plan view and the metal ring W is held.
