PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steering column device excellent in operability and capable of suppressing failure of action and damage of a part. SOLUTION: An operation lever 5 starts engagement of a telescopic gear base 6 with a telescopic gear member 8 and engagement of a tilt gear base 7 with a tilt gear member 9 from a turning angleθ3, i.e., the angle after it is turned by an angleθ1 or more (dashed line A in Fig.9). In such a case, when the gear is engaged with it, side plates 2a, 2a always press a column body 1. Even if unexpected load is given to the column body 1 in the state that a distal end of the gear is only engaged with it, there is low risk that damage of a gear tooth is caused.
