PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an underground cryogenic liquefied gas storage tank wherein the performance required of an underground cryogenic liquefied gas storage tank is divided and shared so that even if either one of the items of performance deteriorates, it will not affect the other items of performance, and so that it is easier to specify the cause of a failure such as damage, and a method for designing it. SOLUTION: The underground cryogenic liquefied gas tank 1 has a sidewall structure 3 and an inside storage tank 6. The sidewall structure 3 has outer pressure bearing performance for supporting earth pressure and underground water pressure and water stopping performance for preventing underground water from flowing in. The inside storage tank 6 comprises an inner tank 7, a refrigerant 8 and an outer tank 9, and has liquid-retaining performance for storing liquefied gas by integrating the performance items shared by these components. The inner tank 7 has airtight/liquid-tight performance for hermetically sealing the liquefied gas and inner pressure bearing performance for supporting the storage pressure of the liquefied gas. The refrigerant 8 has heat insulation performance for shutting off the transfer of heat between the outside and the liquefied gas. The outer tank 9 has diffusion-prevention performance for reducing the influence of cold heat in the event of leakage of the liquefied gas and preventing diffusion of the gas.
